One of a number of projects from legendary ambient guitarist Aidan Baker, Mnemosyne sees him teaming up with frequent collaborator Richard Baker (no relation) on drums along with bassist Rodin Columb. Originally released on CD-R on the now-defunct Piehead Records, “The Air Grows Small Fingers” gets the deluxe vinyl reissue treatment thanks to BlRR's Baker-curated Drone Compendium series. But this album is less pure drone and more post-rock, especially the opening title track, which begins with slowly swirling, almost gothic rock-inspired guitars before unfolding into something like a raw, bleak take on Pink Floyd, complete with Aidan's own soft vocals. Things get more conventionally ambient as the album progresses, but the art rock inspirations remain, “Anameisaname” and its companion piece, “NameReprise,” both see washes of texture emerge from effects-soaked guitar and bass to fill in the gaps between Richard's soft but cymbal-heavy drumming. “Aqualisp” takes things even further; you'll question what bizarre configuration of pedals and processors Aidan must have set up to get such perfect woodwind sounds before remembering that he also plays flute on the album. Then, as the drums and bass get heavier, the guitar regains the foreground, wailing like a heavily tranquilized Hendrix jam. Droning effects are a constant throughout “The Air Grows Small Fingers”, but this is more than just a solid ambient album; it's also a solid psychedelic album and a solid post-rock album, and fans of all or any of the above—not to mention Aidan Baker's other projects—should jump at the chance to grab this obscure little masterpiece on vinyl.
